Two-thirds of salad wasted, says Tesco
Hallelujah – someone has finally said it. Supermarkets’ ‘two for one offers’ just lead to mountains of food being thrown away.
On first reading of the articles that appear in today’s papers, it might seem bad for Tesco. More than two thirds of all its salad sold ends up being wasted, as does nearly half of all bakery items and 40 per cent of its green apples. But, ultimately, Tesco is heading off a scandal. It is being transparent, the first to face up to the issue and if Tesco follows through on its promise to end some multibuy deals and review how it can reduce food waste, then Tesco’s reputation will not be dented.
